The Swedish organic chemist Svante Wold coined the term chemometrics in 1971 [1–4]. International chemometrics society was formed in the 1970s, and the first in-ternational chemometrics meeting was held in Cosenza (Italy) in 1983 [1–4]. Chemometrics society sponsored two international Keywords

Svante Wold, Umeå Universitet, Sweden, invented the word chemometrics for a grant application in late 1971. In 1974, together with Bruce Kowalski, University of Washington, Seattle, USA, he created the International Chemometrics Society (ICS). The first paper with the word chemometrics in it was published by Wold in 1972. As indicated in table 2, the term "chemometrics" was conceived by Svante Wold, in January 1971. The reader's attention is called to the interesting paragraph by Wold, in reference [7], which details the beginnings of chemometrics, including the start of the Chemometrics Society by Wold and Kowal- SVANTE WOLD * Research Group for Chemometrics, Institute of Chemistry, Umei University, S 901 87 Urned (Sweden) KIM ESBENSEN and PAUL GELADI Norwegian Computing Center, P.B. 335 Blindern, N 0314 Oslo 3 (Norway) and Research Group for Chemometrics, Institute of Chemistry, Umed University, S 901 87 Umeci (Sweden) CONTENTS Intr~uction: history of principal component analysis.

Svante Wold and Bruce Kowalski coined the term Chemometrics in 1970s. The most troubling issue as a researcher of any field of science is to identify the correct set of data. In addition, one must satisfy the most important questions of, what, why, when and how. It is Chemometrics was started around 30 years ago to cope with and utilize the rapidly increasing volumes of data produced in chemical laboratories.

Chemometrics slowly gained an identity from the mid‐1970s, after Svante Wold first named it. However, some of the recognised pioneers were slow to identify with it.
